|Elizabeth, a 3-year old from La Vallee de Jacmel, was diagnosed with a congenital
heart defect by Dr.Walkens Desir, our Medical Director at St. Joseph Hospital.
Elizabeth came to the attention of AHDH during the July 2011 mission. She was
fortunate that a new volunteer, Dr.Susan Jeanfreau, discussed the case with her
neighbor in New Orleans, Dr.Joseph Caspi, a heart surgeon.
Dr. Caspi is a volunteer surgeon for HeartGift, a Texas based organization whose
mission is to provide life saving heart surgery to disadvantaged children from
developing countries. With follow-up by Dr.Jeanfreau and Dr. Caspi, connections
were made with HeartGift Louisiana in New Orleans who then flew Elizabeth and her
guardian, Ms. Perette Saint-Felix, to New Orleans on March 21st for surgery.
|On 3/28/2012, after undergoing thorough examinations, Elizabeth underwent repair
of a Ventricular Septal Defect at Children's Hospital of New Orleans with the
generous support of HeartGift and the cardiac surgeons of that institution. AHDH
presented plaques to thank HeartGift and the Children's Hospital.
|AHDH worked closely with Stephanie Berault of HeartGift to
first welcome them at the airport and then to provide hosts for
them during their stay, as well as translators at the hospital.
|During the critical days leading to the surgery, our president Yvelyne and family
hosted them with her brother, Serge, who flew in from North Carolina to assist.
|Vanessa Clincy, Pasteur Roc and their families hosted them after the surgery.
|The Haitian community rallied to their support by keeping them company at the hospital,
serving as translators, providing good Haitian food and taking them shopping.
Jonathan Vilma of the New Orleans Saints participated in a fund raiser to support
HearGift's work with the children.
|Before flying back home, they were taken to Haitian restaurants, the Zoo, Storyland and also rode
on a merry-go-around as well as the ferry ride from east to west bank.
Yvelyne spoke with Perette two days after their arrival in Haiti and Perette said that, on the plane,
" Now, after we see everybody and say hello, we are going back, right?"
That is a testimony to the love and care she received from us all!
Elizabeth's recovery is evolving very smoothly and we thank HeartGift Louisiana (New Orleans)
and Dr. Joseph Caspi, Children's Hospital Of New Orleans, and the New Orleans Haitian
community for their faithful support of AHDH in making this miracle happen!
